SMS Mines - New Colony Order
When sending these to outposts substitute TS for TO. The Tech Manuel has been appropriately updated.

Arcologies - New Colony Complex
These can only be built by class 9 colonies and above. Their purpose is to produce goods and generate wealth for the colony. The maximum number that can be built is equal to the colony starport class. They require 50 Industrial Construction Modules to build each but prove to be a sound investment.

A squadron of the Imperial War Fleet was attacked this week, although attacked is a poor account, a more appropriate description of the encounter would have been, a squadron of the IMP War Fleet did a little target practice. The victim was a lone RIP surveyor on a pleasure cruise though the orbits of various worlds.

Unless your affiliation has home base status, then under Confederate Law all colonies MUST be registered with the Confederacy. Failure to have a colony licence will result in your colony being posted and attacked. Licenses can be obtained from the Prelate; further details in the following IGN.

Land Battles
The question was raised regarding Startroopers and jump training. The issue is whether Startroopers (144) need Battle Armour (115) in order to attack using jump training. The conclusion drawn is that they do not as their power armour is designed for just such a purpose, hence is not lost during the action. Another question raised is that if a ground party attacked by orbital assault (i.e. the party has full jump training and only contains troops and Battle Armour) would there still be the Air Combat, Anti-aircraft and Bombing phases of the battle. The sensible answer would have to be no. The first round would be Long Range Fire then the combat would continue as normal. I will be carrying out extensive play testing and program modifications in order to make sure this works and before it becomes a part of the game and will keep you informed as to the updated program.

The Mailed Fist of the Emperor Strikes Deep into Darkfold

Deep into Confederate space a lone cruiser carrying out 'routine planetary surveys' was waylaid by the Brotherhood. Sending a distress signal to the Empire explaining how he had cleverly discovered the location of the BHD Battleship Infrared, the IMP Patrol Commissioner rerouted a task force bolstered by the FET's Rapid Response Wing. Meanwhile back in Darkfold, the CNF also passed though the area and spotted the IMP Fak Dara and as always responded with what could only be described as deadly force. It is assumed that they expected the Empire to escalate the situation. The assumption was correct only the expectation was far below the reality. Over a dozen Ship o' the Lines descended outgunning and outnumbering the Confederate force. The first engagement proved too much for many of the ships and some fled before firing a single shot including the only representatives of the FET corporate group Falcon (who apparently have just been voted to take control of the FET Affiliation!). The victory went to the Imperials but the day was not without its mourning as it is believed that Rear Admiral Sir Henry Morgan fell. The rebels put up a valiant show of defiance led by Rear Admiral Chleomedes Herroni who fell in the final stand. Both will be surely missed.

Confederate Reinforce Border Policy

Having fled the larger conflict detailed above, the CNF Enforcer carried out her secondary mission of routine border patrol during which the scattered remains of the task force saw to the destruction of the SMS Indiaman Harlequin II. Leaks from the SMS Company Commander's office rumour that the vessel was on a mercy mission delivering much needed supplies to the Brotherhood, but then they would say that?

Rebel Revenge
Following on from last week, the Imperial Task force that rescued the Fal Dara performed a tactical withdrawal in good time to avoid the massed fleet of the Confederacy comprising of the feared Battleship and the yet to be tested in combat DTR Nebulon (better luck next time guys). The IMP Lysander, the vessel commanded by the late Sir Henry Morgan was abandoned after rescue attempts proved futile in the face of the enemy. It has since fallen into the hands of the psychotic Brotherhood (amen to that).

Orbital Assaults
The consensus is that orbital assaults should be able to skip all the rounds of combat preceding short range. This makes startroopers excellent as shock forces. The land battle program has been upgraded to take this into account.

Affiliation Booklet
Surprisingly enough, I am actually up to date with the progress of this useful journal. I am now waiting for the recruitment letters for some affiliations. If you send them in on a PC disk (just in text form), it will make my job a lot easier and faster.

Colony Masses
In the past there has been a small discrepancy between the size of a colony as confirmed by the weekly maintenenance and the colony printout. The weekly maintenance being much more accurate on account of produced goods. This has lead to the collapse of hiports or the temporary closure of shipyards which in turn has baffled players. I will alter the print routine and the layout of the colony printout to read "Colony Manufactured Mass" This being much more useful as all those thousands of mu's of power does nothing for the size of the colony anyway.

FET Embarrassment
A controversial decision has been made by the Space Defence commissioner for the FET, to place the representatives of the Falcon Corporation during the recent Francoise Incident on probation. Arachnid Awakens
Confirmation that the DTR fled angered aliens after a failed bid to win friendship. Luckily only there pride was damaged. This follows a series of events in which they lost captains to lumps of goo and recon parties to planetary defences. Despite this they continue, resolute that the mysteries of the history of Darkfold are there to those who know where to look.

Death Sentence
Does the Imperial service consider it illegal for a chartered affiliation to order it's troops to commit suicide? This tragic turn of events occurred when the FET commanded the loyal crew of a surveying ship to engage the Hive head quarters. Does the Viceroy frown on the waste of human life?

Late Turns
As some of you may be aware, the GM received a good kicking by the flu virus... and combined with the email problems, some turns may have been delayed. It should now be business as usual though. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Thrust movement
When moving around a star system, please, take time to look at the system map. There has been a growing number of turns that run movement directly into stars of into space squares that do not exist. Remember that any space square that has a star or nebula in any part of it can not be traversed. Up till now I have been lenient and have attempted to manoeuvre the ship around it, but as the numbers are increasing I will have to start charging the official 10 TU's as it means looking up the system and working out the movement. 30 seconds extra designing your orders can save as much as 20 TU's (more if you miss that jump).

Pirate assault
The RIP are showing a great interest in the Arachnid system with yet another attack on the BHD this week. Could it be that weakly armed exploration ships are more than a little tempting? The skirmish left nobody with the upper hand so it is likely that next week will prove critical.

Flagritz Strike Back
The FGZ brought the combined fire power of three base ships and a colony to bear on a CNF vessel. The battle was close, with the CNF Yacht Venture lasting 0.0000025 seconds before being blasted into a billion atoms. Let that be a lesson to the Confederacy, all yachts will be treated in like fashion if they stray into Flagritz territory.

Hostile Natives
News is out that the DTR suffered the loss of yet another vessel to hostile aliens in the Arachnid system.

The war over Arachnid continues, with the Brotherhood going to their usual fanatical extremes (a God given right they hold and swear by), driving the RIP pirates before them like chaff. the rout of the pirates from this location though may have may have been more of a tactical withdrawal, as they retaliated two precision strikes, one in another location within Arachnid, the second deep within the Darkfold periphery. They chose their targets well, managing to capture three ships in total without suffering a single hit!!! this can only mean attacks along a trade route. A lesson for all. the affiliation that suffered the most were the Detinus republic. Among their casualties were two Tempest class ships, the unfortunately named Lady Luck and the mis named Bellicose both of which were subsequently boarded. A third ship was destroyed after multiple volleys of photon fire. within the Arachnid system, the AFT lost the Free Trader Elysian Gull, but not without a bloody struggle in the final boarding. It is believed that the captain Commodore Krin Nostrin of AFT was captured and is at present unharmed being held prisoner on the RIP vessel.

********Other News*********

System Sensor Arrays
They have been programmed, but opinions will determine if they are to be included in the game.

What are they?
They are colony complexes that scan ALL ships when they enter the system and when they leave the system by detecting the subspace disturbance generated by the jump engines, the opening of a wormhole or the activation of a stargate, but can not differentiate between these. The information available will be the ship name, affiliation, position number, space square of entry or exit, whether it entered or left the system and the week in which the event occurred.

when do they generate the report?
The report is generated for all sensors arrays bi-weekly with all reports being printed at the same time.

What are the benefits?
From conversations with players, all have stated that the arrays allow governors to see patterns forming showing trade routes and potential places for trouble as well as keeping an eye on the system preventing long term build up of forces. security of a system is tenuous at best, but now this allows a governor to maintain just a little more certainty that the ravening hoards are not amassing a stones throw away. A more subtle benefit is when a number of systems have one and the governors are in communication, as this may show movements of fleets or the gathering of forces over extended periods of time, or if you know where a fleet is, you also know where a fleet isn't. Lastly, posting ships becomes a dame site easier.

What are the drawbacks?
Building and running them as well as misinformation. A colony needs a hiport before construction of a system array can go ahead. To build one requires 100 ICM's. In order to power up the sensor array requires 3000 power (this is removed at the time of printing for convenience). Also as this is not tied to the print out frequency of the colony a nominal fee of one English pound has had to be imposed (charged at time of printing) but the governor has the option of switching the sensor array on or off at their convenience. Loss of the hiport for any reason will result in the destruction of sensor array (obviously, if your colony has built two hiports, both will have to be destroyed first). If the idea proves popular with players, then I will publish the complex construction order and the activation order.

Little can beat the splendour of a massed battle fleet going to war, except possibly the same fleet returning intact. This week the combined powers of the Imperial Services and the Frontier Patrol Group of the FET waged war on the Hive Home World. Three wings, two small groups led by the FET Vice Admiral Harcourt and the IMP Rear Admiral Cezton met up with the main task force commanded by IMP Vice Admiral Lord Roderick Blaine of the MacArther after destroying signal ships on the fringes of the system. The main task force punched a hole though the minimal space defences and led the attack on the home world. The delay in making it to orbit meant that the smaller FET colony on the planet was destroyed before any aid could reach it. The combined fire power of the force was in excess of 280,000 destroying much of the resistance in the opening barrage.

*********Land Battle*********

Not everything went smooth for the ground pounders though as battalions of Hive soldiers left the Hive colony in order to harry the FET landing parties. A diversionary tactic was set up in which attempted boarding action was prevented by the aid of the FET ground party Ahad's Angels. Unfortunately while this battle was being waged, another of the FET troop carriers was successfully boarded. As the Hive cannot fly such craft, it is assumed they intend to do irreparable damage to it before it can be recaptured.

*********Boarding Action*********

After the dereliction of a pirate ship last week, the AFT successfully boarded it this week with only the loss of a few soldiers during the offensive. They are now the proud owners of a predator.

********Space Battle*********

Pirate forces made forages into both Capellan and the Darkfold peripheries. On the Darkfold side a war band of half a dozen fighting ships attacked the Brotherhood Battleship Allonan (built exclusively by the CNF). The battle raged for some time with both sides taking damage but the final outcome left the Allonan without crew and the Pirate boarding successfully captured her. The IMP were luckier in that only a single vessel assaulted Courier caspian Sea. the result here were a stand off.

System Sensor arrays - typo
There has been much discussion on the nature of these devices, but before I write a synopsis of the current feelings I have to admit of a mistake that I made during the original description of them. I wrote that they require 100 ICM's to build. This is wrong, in fact they need 500, a staggering 20,000mu's worth, making the hubble space telescope look like a pair of opera glasses. This may or may not have altered some peoples views of the complex so I will hold before writing further on peoples' opinions.

The Imperial forces consisting of the IMP and the FET continued the bombardment of the Hive Home World during this week. the minimal defence put forward by the Hive was swept away in a hail of photon fire . Down on the ground, task forces controlled by the FET daringly recaptured the Tsushima, this being the ship that was boarded by the Hive last week. On top of this they also captured one of the Hive vessels using a similar tactic to the one that went against them last week, this being the drawing off of the defence using a large ground force while smaller skirmish groups assaulted the ships. the leading party, ahad's Angels proved victorious in the land struggle.

********Space Battle*********

During the RIP foray into Confederate space last week, the pirates captured a Brotherhood Battleship. This obviously hellish act forced prompt action by the BHD. launching small vessels and stationing them in strategic locations around the site of the battle, they hoped to stall the fleet as it fled the scene of conflict. The chances of pulling off such a stunt was one in thousands, but surprisingly enough it actually worked. They really must have prayed hard because this can only really be attributed to the hand of the True One (and maybe a little planning, credit where credit is due). Later that week a task force was sent around the location of the outrunning ships. This force was augmented by the Detinus republic (ever outspoken against the crimes perpetrated by the pirates) and together they gave the RIP a toughly good thrashing even turning their guns on a pirate ship that turned up to derelict and capture the sentry that waylaid the Battleship in the first place. This means that the BHD stand a good chance of rescuing the Battleship that they lost in the first place.

System Sensor Arrays
The debate continues with very reasonable arguments for and against them being voiced by all parties. these cover the wide range of topics such as preventing covert operations and extended manoeuvres within enemy territory to at least giving some security to those frontier colonies as well as keeping an eye on enemy as well as friendly movement. The jury are still out I'm afraid. I purpose this, I will let each affiliation run one System Sensor Array in a suitable colony of their chose, except for colonies in the Yank, Capella and Darkfold systems, for the month of May (two printouts). There will be no construction cost, nor power cost, nor charge. At the end of the period the complexes will be removed and this will give the Affiliations a first hand view of what is recited and the value of it. In case anyone is wondering, the Darkfold, Capella and Yank systems have been exempted from this trial just in case it is decided that the Arrays are no to be included in the game.

The combined forces of the Frontier Exploration and Trade and the Imperial Services struck again at the Hive Home World pounding the colony in an attempt to make them submit. This was not achieved and in a daring move the Flagritz answered their pleas of assistance and accepted custody of the colony and the wrath of the Empire that went with it. This move may prove either a faux pas of unparalleled poor judgement or spell doom for the Empires hold on the Capellan Periphery, only time will tell.

*********Boarding Action*********

The Brotherhood successfully boarded the Allonen previously mentioned in subspace. The capture and successful boarding of a ship recently attacked by pirates is possibly a precedent. A testimony to swift and skilled action.

Not far away from this, a Dewiek ship was also successfully boarded after illegally landing in a Brotherhood colony. As to the intentions of the captain, it may have been nothing more than not noticing the hiport to a desperate attempt to set up an agent. The truth may never be known. A lesson, find out whether the colony you want to trade with has a hiport before trying to land there. This will prevent the onerous task of asking for your ship back should the colony board her.

Recent events have caused a big split within the Imperial power block. Having signed a treaty with the Flagritz, the Hive have become part of the Flagritz nation. The view of the Imperial services regarding the presence of a Flagritz colony inside Imperial boarders without authorisation and also also aiding the enemy the Hive is straight forward, they will not tolerate it. The FET is now turning both ways, half the original strike force supported the IMP in this week's barrage while other held back. There is definitely profit to be made here, it is more a question of aided which side to gain the most. Are the FET walking a tightrope? Should the FET withdraw their support of the IMP, the GTT may step into breach their lack of love for the FGZ is famous. This could prove very interesting.

The RIP launched numerous assaults thoughtout the peripheries this week with mixed results. Luck and a fair amount of skill was with them in the Capellan periphery with a concerted attack on the AFT Ship of the Line Elyssian Gul. This recently upgraded ship was involved in fights with the RIP only a short while ago; ironic that it is now one of them following a successful boarding action. The IMP picket ship Almagest was destroyed in the opening volleys without delivering a single hit.

Deeper in Imperial space and during a sweep though a system by two RIP Predator an FET Deep Explorer and an IMP Indiaman were successfully engaged and boarded during two separate battles. In the second encounter the IMP Survey Cruiser located with the Indiaman fled at the sight of the RIP ships but is believed to have suffered severe damage to the engine section.

Within the Darkfold periphery, the tables were turned. A lone CNF ship out on routine patrols ran across the RIP Tempest Bellicose as it was transporting Mines. Using ion cannons, the CNF Dwight D. Eisenhower sterilised the ship leaving all sections intact. Very luckily for the CNF no other RIP vessels were in the same location.

Another incident with the CNF and a RIP ship left both vessels licking their wounds, while at the other end of the periphery rapid reinforcements by the AFT drove off a pair of over ambitious RIP Predators.

This series of attacks come after a lull in RIP activities, a lull in which affiliations started to become blase, and as a result, many prices were paid. The RIP now have their first Ship of the Line to complement their battleships. There may be hell to pay in certain Head Quarters and quite rightly.

The FGZ responded to the attack on their ship by moving two Baseships tooled up war into a strategic location in order to intercept GTT vessels. This proved successful as the GTT Indiaman Destroyer was smashed into a billion smouldering fragments during the opening volley. There is little that can stand in the way of angered Baseship captains that are out for blood. Is this the start of escalation in an otherwise virtually peaceful war that has been running for almost three years between the GTT and the FGZ, a war that will only be settled by the the back down by the GTT or the payment of reparations for the destruction of the GTT colony in what is now the Flagritz Empire. The next question is what is the Imperial standing point on armed alien warships entering Imperial space in order to attack the Emperor's own trading fleet? It seems unlikely that they will gain any support from the FET without paying for it (although the handing out of conquered Flagritz colonies might be just the ticket).

GM Holidays
Yep, that's right, a little break to recharge the batteries and dream up new scenarios (or just drink lot's of beer). from the 30th June till the 7th July (only one week), I will not be around so if you could save your special actions for a short while, I will get back to them.

Message from the Detinus Republic
It is with the greatest of pleasure that I, Abraham I. Crowthorne on behalf of the Detinus republic, lay claim to the T-Tauri, Venice and all adjacent systems. These systems, henceforth known as the Detinus Periphery, are now administered under the Constitution and Laws of the DTR. Unauthorised shipping within the periphery will be posted and destroyed. Applications for permits should be directed to the Speaker of the House.
Long Live the Republic.

First Class 18 is now out, so grab your copy ASAP as these little beauties are selling at the bargain price of two pounds each. There is also an article on Beyond the Stellar Empire. Unfortunately this is a little dated, but might inspire some of you to show your talents by producing something for the next issue.

GTT/FGZ war Escalates
With the score standing at one ship destroyed apiece, neither side was willing to back down . Reinforcements of the strategic location continued throughout this week. By the end four Flagritz Baseships were ready and waiting for the armada of GTT vessels that arrived. Tactical errors on behalf of the GTT proved just as damaging to the GTT fleet as the numerous photon guns fired by the Flagritz. As the sides withdrew at the end of the battle, the Flagritz had only one Baseship derelicted while the losses on the GTT side were one derelict and four vessels completely destroyed. The GTT Ship of the Line Agincount was notable for its swift retreat in the first round having not even fired a weapon. Still no official response from the Imperial services despite a strike so close to the IMP headquarters Jax.

IMP Fail to catch the RIP so vent Frustration on the CIA
After the attack on Empire shipping last week, the RIP fled with all the goodies. Just to make sure ships from a number of Imperial chartered affiliations arrived to make sure. Surprisingly enough, a CIA ship turned up as well, probably scouting for the Confederate task force rumoured to be standing at alert status within striking distance of the Empire. maybe it scanned nothing worth attacking, or maybe the information arrived too late at Confederate battle command, as at the end of the week, it was destroyed with no sign of the cavalry.

Confederate Retrieve Derelict
Within the Darkfold periphery, the RIP Tempest, Bellicose, derelicted by the CNF was successfully boarded this week.

RIP Attack
A single RIP vessel successfully managed to derelict a DTR Deep Explorer. The lack of defence made this all too easy.

Once again the Confederacy appear to be the aggressors although this time only their scout ship was caught by FET as it ventured a little too close to a well protected world. IMP Blast Innocents
Last week an Imperial colony opened fire on a CIA ship as stated in subspace static. Following the attack an investigation revealed that the attack was illegal. It is clearly stated in the rules that affiliations can in general, only be added to an enemy list during war situations. All other times the posting rules must be used. This has been mentioned in subspace static before. Check your positions, they are your responsibility and your PD might get very upset if accidents happen.

Slow turn around on turns
Some of you might have been experiencing a delay between the time you expect your turn and the actual arrival. This is caused by the computer network, As you might be aware, we have recently upgraded the system and the new one should be much faster, but nothing is ever straight forward and the whole system appears to be crawling. Having exhausted all the checks we are capable of doing, we are having to send for the big boys with the High Tech Doo Dams and Thingimy Bobs to rip it all to bits and sort it out.

The Confederate war fleet made another dramatic attack into the Capellan Periphery striking with absolute destruction against two FET vessels. The FET vessels destroyed were a Ship of the Line and a Patrol Cruiser. Once again it is proved that defence of the Capellan Periphery is more tenuous than moon mist.
The only bright speck in otherwise bleak news for the FET was the Confederate scout ship whose mission it was to discover viable targets accidentally wandered into a small fleet of ships and was torn apart.
In another part of the galaxy, an SMS Belter class was waylaid twice by RIP ships during the same week but despite this the ship managed to pull though relatively intact. Some captains have all the luck.

Despite numerous tactical manoeuvres this week by no less than the RIP, the CIA and the SMS, only one small skirmish involving a RIP yacht occurred. It appears that the lessons of recent weeks have finally been learnt and affiliations have taken a tighter control of stray ships of more likely one fleet was chasing another only to find it too had gone in search of victims.

*********Other News*********

Even as I speak, work is being done drilling and laying new cabling for the network. this will mean that when I return from my holiday, the current rise in inputting errors will be a thing of the past (well...wishful thinking). Current delays, sometimes up to minutes for order processing can lead to re-inputting of the same order, skipping orders, or skipping part of orders mainly due to concentration loss.

In order to help me, I will give a short list of the top five mistakes players make. most of these are trivial and are generally spotted, but these can mean orders fail if not used.

Thrust Movement - there are lots of stars out there, please try to avoid them. Check if you are going though multiple systems that will not take you into one. It's your TU's your wasting.

Correct Locations - make sure you give the right location for the planet you are heading for, the sector you are trying to land in etc. Check that the system actually contains the world you want.

Leaving and Entering orbits - I know that there are a few that neglect this order on a regular basis either as they don't think it's important, just forget, or to make room for other orders. Please include it as it really stuffs the inputting when forgotten. There is actually a fixed penalty of 5TU's even though I don't use it.

Position Numbers - don't forget to include them on any transfer order as well as any PA wherever appropriate. If you do not have the PA code or an authorisation, then your turn should be aborted there and then.

Clearly written orders - this can make the difference between straight forward inputting and a complete disaster. Even emails are not free from this as carriage returns appear to be arbitrary in some cases leading to a block of confusing text and numbers.

Confederates Raise Stakes
The Confederacy managed to pull off a potentially disastrous mission this week. The war fleet entered orbit of a world containing a FET colony with an active posted list. The colony opened fire on the fleet but the return fire was devastating cutting the colony defences to ribbons almost immediately. The lack of FET friendly ships in the orbit meant that the entire fleet could devote all their attention and fire power to the colony whilst suffering only one dereliction.

Kastorian Relief
Having suffered major casualties, the Kastorians issued a plea to allies to come to their aid. The turnout was surprising considering the lack of preperation time with a show of force from both humans and aliens, effectively blockading the planet of last week's vicious attack by the Brotherhood. Unfortunately as fast as the response was, almost all of the Armada had already vacated and only a couple of vessels ran into the blockade, these having been damages in their last battle. Needles to say there were no survivors.

Confederate Housecleaning
Having discovered a small RIP warfleet in the Darkfold periphery the AFT alerted all the Confederate Factions of their presence. Seeking revenge for past atrocities warships were sent from the AFT, BHD, CIA, and the DTR. Even a FET ship got caught up in the excitement although it didnt hang around. This would almost certainly have been a decisive victory but the RIP, rather than bolstering their fleet, fled before the end of the week, leaving only a scuppered yacht.

Other Battles
Across the Darkfold periphery there were numourus other fights involving the dereliction of two FET ships (not the one in the above space battle though). Why one was landed in a Brotherhood colony is anybody's guess.

A CIA Runner fell prey to the RIP on their tour de Darkfold. Leaving ships in the middle of nowhere is asking for trouble.
Having missed the earlier assault on the KAS colony a few weeks back a couple of Brotherhood warships decided to check on the rebuilding work in progress. That they were both destroyed indicates that it is presumably on schedule.
The Brotherhood were feeling rather pleased with them selves for derelicting an FET Supra Freighter last week. This week had loaded up a ship ready for the boarding action. Unfortunately for them, the RIP had other plans, and having discovered the location of last week's battle turned up in force destroying the Brotherhood boarding vessel and stealing the Supra freighter.
The CNF were luckier in their boarding action carried out on the RIP ship derelicted last week. The boarding action was a mere formality.
A rouge Dewiek ground party in a colony successfully boarded a KAS ship that had landed in the starport. The colony not having the KAS on the defend list was unable to prevent the proceedings.

Colony Assaults & Starport Battles
A colony will use it's security complexes to launch attacks and defend other positions. This is a starport battle. In these cases a colony will never be captured. This is the definition of a starport battle.
If the colony is defending itself, it will use the entirety of it's military wing and may be captured as a result. This is the definition of a colony assault.
The question arises is should the attacker have to enter the starport to capture it if the battle was won in the colony sector? If it does, it means it will generally have to fight defenders in the starport making colonies almost invulnerable. If it does not, it would entice people to keep more military hardware in the military wing rather than using it to form a ground party in the starport. Your opinions would be appreciated, but please keep them very brief, hi-lighting your choice.

IMP Claims Debt
It has been concluded that a CIA COG was destroyed as a result of a breach of Inter Affiliation Rules of Engagement at IMP Colony St. Petersburg. Pecuniary compensation is therefore available at the standard rates.
Hulls at replacement cost (Cog @ 8/60/15) = 197000
Engines at replacement cost = 11000
1280mu of unspecified cargo @ 100/mu = 128000
Ship Total = 336000 stellars
To families of lost crew, assumed to be 8, 20 years pay based on a 40 week maintenance Cycle @ 5 stellars per maintenance = 1040 stellars
Cargo & Fittings can be adjusted to replacement cost on provision of a certified ship's manifest. Alternatively pecuniary compensation set by an independent party (EEM/IND Thorne) will be considered.

A break down in communication was the undoing of the RIP, as events started to turn horribly pear shaped. In two separate incidents an early movement led other affiliations to discover where marauding with enough time to send for backup. A third event, also connected, was that one RIP ship attacked an FET ship of the Line with no other support. Needless to say, it received a thoroughly good hiding and fled with it's tail between it's legs. As the smoke cleared, the Brotherhood had notched up three kills while the combined efforts of the SMS and AFT had derelicted another.
Another Confederate scout ship bit the dust in the continuing efforts to discover viable Imperial targets and strategic information.

*********Land Battle*********

The assault on St. Petersburg continued this week, but help was at hand. Two Imperial task forces that had been tracking the CIA across the planet gave up the goose chase and decided to head home. Luckily for them, they arrived just in time to see the CIA bombing the colony. Rushing to the rescue, their combined forces were able to inflict massive damage on the CIA, but at great expense to themselves. The matter has by no means been resolved.
A daring display of ingenuity allowed the CNF to capture an IMP ship. By landing a ground party on a world and boarding the ship, they were able to capture her with little effort and no chance of the ship escaping.

*********Other News*********

Ex FET ships on the CNF posted list
The CNF has noted the change in ownership of a number of FET vessels currently on the CNF posted list. It is believed they have been acquired for resale to a third party.
Warning - any affiliation contemplating the purchase of Deep Explorers Protector (2106) or Mutsu (2964) take note that these positions will NOT be removed from the CNF posted list. Buy and operate these positions at your own risk - they will remain legitimate targets for the Confederate "Rolling Thunder" Strike Force!

Colony Assaults
After a number of justified points (and not too few unjustified ones), I have drawn the conclusion that attacking ground parties need not enter the starport to capture the colony. The reasons are as follows:-
1. The straport is not an intimate part of a colony in the same way that Heathrow is not the centre of London, also explaining why it takes half a day to pick up 1mu of goods!
2. Most assaulting forces are not surface capable, therefore must move into the colony sector before entering the colony. If someone is willing to go to the extra expense of incorporating shuttles, they should gain an advantage.
The ongoing problem of protecting the military wing (a feature present since the conversion to computer 15 years ago), is being considered. So far there is a split exactly down the middle with the sides taking the stance that the proposed solutions are either woefully inadequate or make the colony completely invulnerable, obviously both can't be right? I think a few tests may have to be done.

RIP (Really Independent Pirates?)
In an unprecedented move the RIP broke the treaty of non-aggression with the Kastorians in order to capture two SMS merchant vessels while completely avoiding a fight with a lone CNF battleship situated in the same location. While the CNF can't be blamed for the RIP's choice of targets, questions are being asked.
The Brotherhood would gladly have traded places with the CNF as all they managed to destroy were a couple of RIP yachts that had been strategically placed to allow the remnants of last week's fiasco to escape.
If this was not as productive as hoped, a lone BHD Tempest was caught by a RIP fleet and captured, although the primary target was an AFT ship of the line which was also boarded. The RIP seem to be doing very well preying on ships in the Darkfold periphery.

Meanwhile back in the Capellan periphery, the IMP, FET and SMS were about to throw a party for a RIP ship when Rolling Thunder, the CNF war fleet gate crashed. The results were cataclysmic, annihilating the FET and one of the IMP ship of the Lines while the other IMP vessel crawled away with barely enough life supports. Needless to say, the CNF didn't engage the RIP and vice versa, leaving the SMS to deal with them.

*********Boarding Action*********

Having learnt the location of a Brotherhood survey ship, a RIP vessel landed next to it and sent out a boarding team. Fighting was fierce as the Brotherhood ship was not without defences, but the pirates had the advantage and the ship finally fell.
In the Capellan periphery the AFT boarded the derelict paddington Bear, the RIP ship engaged last week.

*********Other News*********

After realising the futility of continued aggression, the Kastorians and the Brotherhood have vowed to become allies. With the breaking of the agreement with RIP and the danger the RIP now pose in Kastorian space, is a timely event.

IMP reply to latest CIA demand for compensation.
In light of the fact that the CIA have declined to accept our most generous offer of compensation for the loss of their cog in the orbit of Winward and have also indicated that they are not prepared to negotiate a reasonable settlement, the offer is withdrawn forthwith. On consideration, the Viceroy has awarded the Governor of St. Perersburg the stellar order of Merit for destroying the gun running rebel ship.

Due to a number of anonymous phone calls that may be related to the game, Dave Smith has been left no option but to step down from controlling the Kastorians. Unlikely as it may seem, should anyone know anything relating to this, I would be grateful if they would either contact the police or myself. This leaves Kastorian space under the direct control of the GM, which means that as I cannot spend the time negotiating with the various factions to the same degree Dave did, I have little option than to reinstate the Kastorian system ship programme (basically speaking, zero tolerance, with as many ships as are needed to completely and utterly destroy any and all aggressors in the Kastorian space, the moment they arrive).
For the same reason, the RIP can no longer jump into Kastorian space.

Emails
The first step has been completed today with the successful sending of a system map via email. The rest is soon to follow.

As expected, there was a fierce outcry regarding the posting of battle reports on the website, although all have shown interest in posting subspace static instead. There shouldn't be any problem with this.

Claims settle in Solo and Faery

With the NHS bringing in almost a million troops into Solo and the GTT choosing it's moment to contest Faery at the same time, it seems the DTR and it's alllies either found it hard to find enough troops to respond or quite simply decided it wasn't worth the hassle as there were far more important matters to deal with in the Senate. Who knows what other life threatening topics they have to discuss, such as the correct biscuit to have with afternoon tea. The end result is that Solo and Faery, both systems with significant incomes, are now under control of Empire based affiliations.

GTT move to clear out the Dewiek Pocket Pheriphery

Having resorted to bribery to get other affiliations to move out of the DHP, with rumoured multi-million stellar amounts being offered, the GTT now appear to have cranked the pressure up. An AFT base has been attacked and a few of the nearby ships have been blown up and damaged by GTT warship class ships patrolling the area. As we write this report, information we have seen shows that the GTT have already taken 20% of the AFT base and fighting continues. We approached the GTT to ask why they are resorting to force and were told that they have had to move significant military power into the DHP to deal with ANT forces, so now they are mopping up all the resistance of other affilaitions that were asked to leave and decided not to.

Solo claim swings back and forth

The situation in Solo appears to be getting even more heated. First the NHS dropped 600,000 troops to contest the system and then the DTR answered with enough troops of their own to trump the NHS claim. The NHS found yet more troops, taking the contesting claim up to 750,000 and once again the DTR answered, bringing Solo back under DTR control. Now the NHS have had a look down the back of the sofa and found yet more troops, taking the contesting claim to a massive 900,000 trained troops. We wait to see if the DTR have an answer to this. We can only guess where all these troops are coming from, but what is clear is that the established affiliations clearly have far larger armies than many thought.

NHS attempt to claim Solo away from DTR

In a shock move the NHS have contested the Solo claim with a huge garrison of 600,000 trained troops. In a move that nobody saw coming, especially as it was unknown the NHS had such a large force of troops to draw upon, the NHS seem to be provoking a response from the DTR. Currently there has been no word from the DTR in how they are going to deal with this claim jumping, although rumours are that they are pretending the Solo claim doesn't really matter to them and so action is unlikely. However this may be a smokescreen and we may yet see the DTR's powerful fleet cause havoc in the system of Solo, which has for a long time been an important junction and fought over by many different factions.

DNA Chairman TonTon resigns

The following communication has been leaked from the DNA to the GTT's PD.

Greetings CEO Fox.
It regrets me to have to inform to you that the DNA nation state will be renouncing its claim on Aladdin system following a ceremony planet side, shortly.
However, it gives me great pleasure to have to inform you that these ceremonies are being planned by Vladimir Tavikovitch, the South Road Traffic Coordinator. He is also responsible for all DNA and .ore. assets in the Outer Naplian (Capellan) periphery so if there are any further issues, please take it up with him.
For any and all other matters, please forward your request directly to the DNA directorate services at NexusID: DNA people.
The Foreign Ministry objects one last time to your illegal claim jump of Aladdin, but we realise it is time to de-escalate.
Normally i would sign off with Naambta, but doing so would be hypocritical. Let me say good riddance instead.
I hereby resign in protest!

Chairman TonTon,
Foreign Minister, DNA
cc: Directorate Services personnel coordinator - !urgent resignation!

DTR threaten WMB with fines for multiple breaches of DTR Law

Lady Sylvansight of the DTR has issued a fine of 1,000,000 stellars to the Wimbles for multiple breaches of DTR Penal and Territorial Law. This seems a very brave move of the DTR to risk upsetting the huge and warlike WMB when they also have the rival NHS Solo system claim to deal with. No word has been recieved yet that the Wimbles are going to pay, but if the formidable WMB warfleet is seen heading for the DTR home systems we will know what their thought are on the matter. The DTR and WMB fleets going head to head would be a sight to behold.

DNA and GTT clash over Aladdin system claim while Pirates look on.

The GTT have this week launched an attack on the DNA outpost in Aladdin, in what appears to be little more than a turkey shoot. Around 100,000 GTT Naplian Startroopers attacked the DNA position to remove the rival system claim. Reports indicate the DNA garrison were taken by surprise and lost control of the base in the first few hours of the fighting. The base has since been reflagged from [Free Naplian Capital] Peaceful Protest to [Loyal Naplian Capital] DNA claim Ended so it's fair to say there was a clear message being sent by the GTT. We have been waiting for the DNA leadership to comment but so far they have been unusually silent. No doubt when they have crawled out from under their desks they will have something to say on the matter.

While this attack was going on several pirate ships were also seen in Aladdin, according to the GTT in what may be true or may be a diversion, with reports of a pirate GP and scout being destroyed while a 150HH pirate warship slipped away and escaped from incoming anti-pirate patrols.

Secret meeting of the EEM

A recent communication intercepted by one of our top reporters today made us aware of a meeting of the EEM. This is underway in a top secret location called Black Pool, which sounds suspiciously like the lair of a pirate band. After pulling in many favours, we were able to identify some of the attending members. On the bases that they won't be named we were able to find out some slight information of the subjects to be discussed at the meeting and one thing is for certain, there could be huge impacts to the lives of everybody living in the galaxy. Details to follow. When the shadowy figures of the EEM come together with the top political players in a pirate base the possibilities are endless!

You are never more than 6 systems from a RAT 🐀

A new saying has arisen in the bars and spaceport of starbases throughout the many peripheries; you are never more than 6 systems from a RAT.

It is understood that this saying originated in Yank and spread by trade vessels to peripheries far and wide. Many starbases have heightened their security and added additional sensors and locks to various entry points including foul and grey water outfalls. Beer and drug stocks are undergoing increased proofing to avoid the critters gaining entry and consuming the stockpiles.

Will this present as a new plague of proportions never before seen or is this some simple urban myth being spread for the amusement of some mischievous entity? Who knows, but to be certain... check the shadows.

This year we will again be returning to the Briardene Hotel. They were welcoming, the bar didn't run out of beer pre-covid and there was room for quiet chats. Along with Wetherspoons there is the Victoria just down the road (Sam Smiths - last time beer was around 2 shillings per pint and a full round was less than £10).

Mostly drinking beer and talking toot though we have a good few things on the agenda.

Bookings are done directly with the hotel. Book by phone and say that you are with KJC Games

All staff should be able to deal with the booking but if there are any problems ask for Tracy (manager) as she dealt with all our foibles in previous years.

Dog days are over

With the fall of the DEN and the implosion of their home territory as the AFT, DTR and GTT moved in, it was unlikely the Dewiek would rise again. The DWP gave the species a little hope with the Dewiek Pocket Periphery kept under lock and key. But news has reached us of the AFT's penetration of this private area of space that's been locked down. With a base and claim in one of the three visible systems it seems that the end of the Dewiek is near. A once noble and aggressive race, determined to make an impact on the galaxy is now little more than a species that lives under the command of others. A sad end to a once powerful species that used to control a significant part of known space.

Pirate activity continues

Yet more reports of pirate activity have been received, one from the WMB, losing a freighter in Solo and another from the FET who reported they had engaged and hit the attacking pirate ship with several weapons before it managed to make off with it's prize. Hopefully the pirate ship took significant damage and will now be out of action for some time. The Corewards periphery seems to have been plagued with pirates recently and many travellers would welcome a break from attacks.

MEK incursion into Corewards

The FET and GTT have mounted a joint venture into Nog-Kesri to tackle a MEK force. It isn't known where they have come from, with the only other MEK ships seen so far being located in the Orion Spur. The lack of a known link between where they have appeared in Corewards and the Orion Spur has caused some concern among planetary populations as who knows where they could turn up next! Fortunately the combined FET/GTT task force dealt the MEK a heavy blow and the threat has been eradicated. But we all know this is unlikely to be the last we hear of the MEK in Corwards and we would encourage ship captains to keep a keen eye on thier sensor screens when travelling near Nog-Kesri.

    Aladdin faces ongoing DNA/GTT tension

The tensions between the DNA and GTT in the Coptuv system recently spilled over into the DNA system of Aladdin. A significant party of GTT ground troops has reinforced one of their bases in the system and claimed it, forcing the system claim into turmoil as the DNA finds itself under threat of losing the system. With the DNA chairman asking for help, several affiliations have been seen sending ships to evacuate any in the local population that want to escape the GTT. But so far not a shot has been fired and despite the AFT, FEL and DTR assistance no reisistance to the claim jump has been encountered so far. It remains to be seen if the DNA and it's friends will scatter before this hostile take over or put in a last minute counter claim to thwart GTT intentions.

    Increasing pirate activity

Recent reports indicate a new surge in pirate attacks with the AFT and GTT reporting ships lost. Knowing how some don't like to advertise losses we wouldn't be surprised if this is the tip of the iceberg. Reports passed to us show the ship PIR Scavenger running ID 43174 and another ship of the same name running ID 68668 have both been in action with successful boarding attempts. It's unknown whether these are seperate ships or the same ship reregistered, but our information suggests that it would be hard for these pirates to cover the space where these attacks happened with just one ship. One thing is for sure, be on your guard as open space is not as safe as it once was.

GCE ships loitering in deep space

After the fall of the GCE and a lot of their assets being shared or purchased it was thought that the affiliation was no more. Yet deep space scans indicate that there is still a significant number of GCE warships holding station in deep space between Coptuv and Yank on the transport route into the Corwards Arm. Nobody knows what these ships are up to and why they are still flagged GCE, but our best guess is that are captains either awaiting new orders or owners after the fall of the GCE command structure.

    Tension in the Corewards Arm

With the DNA obtaining several ex-GCE bases in the Coreward Arm it has found itself in the middle of an asset grab of serious proportions and aggression. Our reporters witnessed several GTT troop carriers heading for the Corewards system as the DNA published information suggesting they were accidental owners of the system and that the assets were to be moved on. As the GTT ships started to arrive the bases were quickly passed to the CIA, thus thwarting the GTT intentions as they were hardly likely to start dropping troops on their allies bases. This shrew move by the DNA seems to have calmed matters in the Coreward arm temporarily, although the shift in relations between the GTT and DNA has taken a negative turn. When asked what their next move might be the GTT refused to comment.

    GCE collapse

The GCE are no more, save for some scattered light freighters. The affiliation which enjoyed a sharp rise and profiltable relations with many has ceased trading. Rumors point to the GTT buying up GCE assets before stripping the rival corporation of anything of value. Although our reporters at the SSS have been quick to point out that any GCE assets not in GTT systems have been taken over by both the DNA and FET. So it seems many different affiliations were able to profit from this development including a new group called the HSH who appear to have taken over the GCE war fleet. No doubt many in the peripheries will be watching with interest where these ships are used, who the HSH are and how they were able to get thier hands on so many warships so quickly.

    Secudus trials

In the Cluster Secudus has continued his trials, claiming to root out terrorists working against the Empire. With tends of thousands of beings being sent to the camps or worse. There is no sign of these actions stopping as the NHS clamp down on the locals and bring them under the harsh control of the Empire.

I’ve played on and off for approximately 10 years, over a 20 year spell. After some interesting debate on the in-game forum, I did wonder what, exactly, has kept drawing me back to the game, when for so many others I’ve generally lost interest after a few months.

Ultimately, I think it is a combination of automation (that allows the game to handle thousands of positions to interact on a daily basis) coupled with Special Actions (that allow the story arc to develop in a way that could not be catered for by a set of predefined list of available orders).
