Subspace Static - 192 October  [Recruit]

******BSE Newsletter October 1992******

***Bug Reports***

There area few bugs still in the programs. The main one seems to be with the AFT special ability which seems to work sometimes and not others. We will have a long look at it this week and see if we cannot fix this intermittent fault. For the colony governors, the bug with factories not using energy we will also try to sort this one out.

***Dorn***

The system number for Dorn is 151 and not 179 as printed on the system maps. Please amend you records as appropriate.

***Player Run Newsletter***

BSE now has its own player run newsletter, a copy of the first issue should be enclosed. Anybody can send messages, articles, or anything which is to do with BSE for publication. Affiliations should have their information directors send an affiliation message. You can either send submissions to us with your turn or write directly to the editor:
Richard Cozens, Fieldview, Swineshead Road, Frampton Fen, Boston, Lincs PE20 1SG

***Special Actions***

Special actions are supposed to cost a minimum of 10Tus each to perform and although I have not been charging or many of them but I am going to start from now on. There is no TU cost for writing additional information which goes with your other orders, such as telling me you are interacting with the Hyport or that the training you are performing is anti-boarding, etc.

***Colonies***

Several colony governors have had problems building or using the RTS. I have had a look at it and most do seem to be working correctly. The only thing I can think might be going wrong is that the outpost must be on the same world as the colony for the RTS to work. Also, when you set your production at factories, make sure that you have all the materials which are needed. Some items take other things in addition to metals. Also if you use EP you will lose a whole weeks production. It is better to set small amounts of items to build so tat you don't have to cancel it.
The item number for stellars is 9999, I don't think the rules mention it.

***Free Starts***

The free set-up for a ship and two turns should really have had just one free turn. From the end of October the training manual will come with just one free turn so if you have any friends who wish to join BSE ask for their free start now.

***KJC News***

Enclosed with this turn should be a copy of KJC news - October. You will notice that some games are increasing in price from November 1st but there is no change for BSE. Also, payments over 45 pounds will be credited with an extra 10% credit. If you pay by credit card and want to take advantage of this, let me know when it is tome to pay, otherwise I will just charge you the normal 15 pounds. Thanks.

***First Class Issue 11***

This is now available. It contains news on all KJC Games and also has a section on BSE - Stellar Vacancies. Each issue costs 1.90. If you would like a copy let me know on your printout and I can charge it to your BSE account.

Subspace Static - 192 November  [Recruit]

******BSE Newsletter November 1992******

With the October KJC News again plugging BSE and friends coming in from recommendations from existing players there have been a fair number of new ships starting. Affiliation recruitment officers should notice this in the new members section of your political printouts. At the moment I am processing all turns the day they arrive at our office but if the current trend continues, I may have problems on Monday when the new game week starts. This may mean that some will not go out until Tuesday. If this does happen, I plan on doing ships from outside the IK first as they have longer posting times.

***Large and Small Affiliations***

As you would expect some affiliations are more popular than others, especially the FET and IMP. I have put a message onto the Training Ships first turn advising players of this which has helped the smaller affiliations a little. It has been suggested that extra stellars could be given to encourage new players into less popular affiliations. I thought I would put it to players to say if they thought this was fair or not.

***First Turn Newsheet***

John Clink, the SMS affiliation leader suggested that it would be a good idea to give new players a newsheet explaining a little about BSE and some clues on what to do for the first few turns. This is an excellent idea and John is now writing a suitable piece. I also thought we could include a half page advert/message from each affiliation. This should be designed to appeal to new players and encourage them to join your affiliation rather than any other. Affiliation leaders could you arrange for your submission and send it to me for the middle of the month. Thanks John, an excellent idea.

***Jump Engine Swap***

When using the jump/thrust engine swap please write the number of JUMP engines you wish to take FROM either CARGO or ENGINE. Thanks.

***Extra Sensory Perception!***

Some players have been doing special actions which need me as GM to decide for them what they will do. Examples of this is doing a ground exploration and then asking me to pick a creature to examine. I am in a no win situation in cases like this. If I get you to examine which then attacks you then I get the blame and if I check it out first that is not fair. This also includes Jump movement. You must have the system number to jump into it. However, with probing of moons I will let you do a moon list and ten move to first moon, second moon etc.

***Second Ship***

If anybody is interested n starting a second or more ships ask me for a ship set-up form. Using this you can start another ship at the colony of your choice. Just give me the word, colony square, and colony name. Extra ships must belong to the same affiliation as the first.

***Intergalactic News***

I hope to include the second edition with this turn but if it is not enclosed then it has not arrived at our office in time. Please ask me for your copy next turn. Thanks.

***Telephone Exchange***

We have had a new telephone system put in here at KJC so if you have any questions you should be put through speedily to me. If possible, try not to ring on Mondays as that is the busiest day.

***First Class Issue Eleven***

I know I said this was available last time but we had another problem with our printer but this has now been fixed. Issue eleven is now half printed and will be ready in a couple of days time. If you want a copy please mention this with your next turn.

Subspace Static - 192 December  [Recruit]

******BSE Newsletter December 1992******

***Larger affiliations***

All affiliations seem to have had a rush of new members during November and hopefully this will continue into December. My idea of pushing new players into the smaller affiliations has been made redundant and was probably a bad idea anyway as several players pointed out.

***Hyports***

I thought I would mention Hyports as several players seem to be unsure as to how to use them. With a Hyport your ship only (not ground parties) can do all transactions which you would do at a star port. These are the buy, sell, deliver, pickup and transfer training. You cannot do gambling, ship upgrades, etc. as these are from complexes which are located at the colony. You also do not get a market report. If you wish to transact with the hyport just write either in the line above the action or in a special orders box and an arrow 'use colony hyport'. You must give the colony number of whos hyport you are using. This is very important as at some planets there are several.

***Inflation***

Colony governors set prices and amounts depending on the situation as they see it. This can sometimes mean sharp increases in the process of some items. If you think this may happen to you, you can write in a special order box 'only buy if price is ## or less'.

***Restrictions on Hyport Activity***

The Hyport at Tortuga on the planet Dogleg will now only allow ships to dock with it once per turn. Colonists have limited amounts of items for sale so ships transferring huge amounts of goods between Hyports quickly exhaust stock levels leaving none left for other ships. I expect other colonies to adopt the same policy.

***Intergalactic News III***

This is now available and should be enclosed with your turn.

*** To Ur Is Dewiek ***

Dewiek forces had a hefty smackdown against the mysterious living ships known as the T’Cath (TCA). Seven adult TCA 400 hull capital ships, each firing eight of their notorious plasma cannons, were killed by a DEN and DOM fleet of some 700 ships.

Of the minimal losses suffered by the DEN / DOM, one-eyed Magnus and Nevets Motnhap of the FEL were amongst the dead.

*** The Long Quiet Season ***

Listen…
There’s no sound of anger or of annoyance,
There’re neither cruisers racing on the jump lanes
Nor there jump lanes for them to race on,
There’re neither monks chanting on the battlegrounds
Nor bells calling us to the True One.
There’s neither the lightning cracking of the sky
Nor the persistent Naplians pattering on my roof.
There’s no Dewiek arm in arm to admire the magnificent view
There’re no war drums to feed Human ears
Nor Hive sirens to steal the boredom away
There’s no unfamiliar wing creeping underneath the Falconian sun
Nor floods to enshroud the Aquaphid grounds
The land lies lonely out here
On this lazy summer’s day
There’s no pollution to poison the airs of Inversion
Nor forests to give them life
All I hear is the hushing sound of the wind
Assisting the sand to fall into beautiful undulations.

*** Falconians Saved ***

The Imperials have cunningly saved the Falconian Republic from being consumed by the Dewiek Elder Nation and at no small cost to the DEN either. Whilst the new pro tem Consul crowed about the “victory”, all former FCN systems besides Acropolis have been taken over by the two warring Empires - Human and Flagritz.

Was it all worth it? For the IMP / GTT it clearly was, for the movement of a few hundred thousand troops is surely nothing to the cost they endured trying to and failing to knock the DEN out of Solo after the fact. The FCN now plucked off most of their navy and wider assets are a tiny nothing of their former self. The DEN may have resorted to some dirty namecalling but can the costs endured to save an enfeebled FCN have really been worth it? Time will tell.

*** Goodbye Falconians ***

The galaxy bid farewell to the Falconian Republic as the Human Empire subsumed them into their expanding territories. This marks the second death of an alien civilisation at the hands of the IMP / GTT in recent years. Like the extinguishing of the nearby Ulians, no voices of opposition could be heard from other quarters. This marks a long-period of appeasement by the Detinus Republic and Dewiek Elder Nation.

*** Norozov, No More ***

Kantner: No more do I see the starlight caress your cyclops eye
No more feel the tender kisses we used to share
I close my fists and clearly my heart remembers
A thousand goodbyes could never put out the embers

Chulainn: Oh the power is mine now!

Kantner: Norozov, I love you so, and my heart forever
Will belong to the memory of the love that we knew before
Please, come back to my arms; we belong together
Come to me; let's be sweethearts again and then let us part no more

Chulainn: Oh all the Stellars mine now!

Sylvansight: I will have his eye!

Kantner: No more do I feel the touch of your hand on mine
No more see the love-light making your dark eyes shine
Oh, how I wish I never had caused you sorrow
But don't ever say for us there is no tomorrow

Chulainn: Oh all the ladies mine now!

Sylvansight: I will have his eye!

Chorus: The power is in the eye!

Kantner: Norozov, I love you so, and my heart forever
Will belong to the memory of the love that we knew before
Please, come back to my arms; we belong together
Come to me; let's be sweethearts again and then let us part no more

Sylvansight: I will have his eye!

Chulainn: Oh the power is mine now!

Chorus: The power is in the eye!

Kantner: Norozov, I love you so, and my heart forever
Will belong to the memory of the love that we knew before.

Lanner: So, old cyclops has finally met his comeuppance
Maybe its time for a comeback

Chorus: No, no one wants you back!

Lanner: I always did like that chair of his…

Chorus: The power is in the eye!
The power is in the eye!
The power is in the eye!

*** ALIEN CRIMINALS BROUGHT TO JUSTICE ***

FILTHY AND DISHONOURABLE Dewiek mercenaries have dared to attack HONEST AND HARDWORKING GTT warships in the Coptuv system.

THEY HAVE BEEN BROUGHT TO JUSTICE. LONG LIVE THE EMPEROR!

The Dewiek commander’s lengthy response was appreciated by xenophile and philanthropist HQ Manager Tom Krieger but this does not change the facts.

FURTHER JUSTICE IS EXPECTED AT THE EMPEROR’S PLEASURE. LONG LIVE THE EMPEROR!

*** Voice of the Naplian Liberation Front ***

We are the Naplian Liberation Front. We have commandeered this station to bring you important and vital deprogramming. You are a slave of the Galactic Trouser and Tussles Imperium of Unspecified Services! We have witnessed the press ganged upon by Imperial thugs. Rounding up reporters by the thousands and throwing them in weasel dens. Mocking the Great Uncle of the Flagritz. Manufacturing consent out of a lust for imports of wheat cereals! We poor Naplians(*) are given no training and substandard equipment when preparing your nutritious breakfasts. We are sent forward by the Imperial snack commissioners with threats of triple-filing tax returns on unreasonable deadlines! Death would be preferable. We are allegedly paid a wage but have you ever tried to buy anything with just $1? Strangely none of those politicals earning $10,000 or more a week seem to care about our plight. Not to mention that the Imperials throw perfectly good meat into the grinder instead of slow cooking it in black bean sauce. They have no respect for a classic burrito! We are left grieving for young families who have never tasted quality ranch sauce. You don’t need to be a dead Naplian to know the value of a good guacamole.

* No actual Naplians included.

Persistent Browser-Based Game (PBBG)

I’ve played on and off for approximately 10 years, over a 20 year spell. After some interesting debate on the in-game forum, I did wonder what, exactly, has kept drawing me back to the game, when for so many others I’ve generally lost interest after a few months.

Ultimately, I think it is a combination of automation (that allows the game to handle thousands of positions to interact on a daily basis) coupled with Special Actions (that allow the story arc to develop in a way that could not be catered for by a set of predefined list of available orders).
